Round 16 Match Report – Claremont v East Perth

Friday, July 27, 2018 - 12:25 PM by Chris Pike
CLAREMONT Oval wasn’t quite conducive to an attractive match on Saturday but Claremont adapted to the conditions the better to beat East Perth by 24 points to return to the WAFL top five.

Fifth position on the WAFL ladder went on the line at Claremont Oval on Saturday between Claremont and East Perth.

A water soaked Claremont Oval always meant that ball movement and scoring was going to be a challenge throughout the afternoon, so when the Tigers had kicked five goals to two in the first half to lead by 23 points at half-time it appeared to be a match-winning advantage.

It proved to be the case as well with just one goal apiece in the second half with Claremont running out 6.13 (49) to 3.7 (25) winners.

It was a crucial win for the Tigers too with them improving to a 6-8 record to move into fifth position while the Royals slipped to 5-8 and down to seventh position to be a game behind despite having a better percentage than any of the teams fighting over those fourth and fifth spots.

Tom Lee was only multiple goal scorer in the game kicking two early goals for Claremont from nine kicks and three marks.

Claremont's midfield also got on top throughout the afternoon led by Jye Bolton who racked up 37 possessions, six marks, four inside 50s and three tackles.

Jared Hardisty thrived in the conditions to have a big say in the final result for the Tigers with 29 disposals, 13 tackles and seven inside-50 entries.

Tom Ledger made his return after three weeks in the reserves for Claremont and played well with 27 possessions and six tackles while Kane Mitchell finished with 25 disposals and six tackles, Morgan Davies 19 touches and 10 tackles, and Ryan Lim 18 possessions and 11 tackles.

Oliver Eastland returned for the Tigers and had a strong performance in the ruck with 14 possessions, four tackles and 33 hit outs.

A big positive for East Perth was once again the performance of 20-year-old Mitch Dobson who thrived in the challenging conditions with 33 possessions, five marks, five inside-50 entries and three tackles.

Brayden Ainsworth collected 25 disposals for the Royals, Luke Partington 25, Stan Wright 18, Nathan Blee 18, Matthew Allen 18, Shayne Hille 17, Will Maginness 17 and Francis Watson 17.

Patrick McGinnity, Jake Waterman and Allen were the three goal scorers for East Perth.

Claremont did start encouragingly with a goal after four minutes to Tom Lee but it took almost 10 more minutes for the next score and that was an East Perth goal to Matthew Allen.

The Royals then went ahead with a goal to former Tiger Patrick McGinnity before Claremont went into quarter-time leading by five points thanks to a late goal from Morgan Davies.

Lee then added a second goal early in the second term and the Tigers pulled away shortly before half-time with goals to Tom Curren and Keifer Yu to hold a commanding 23-point lead at the half-time break considering the conditions of the ground that made it near impossible for ball movement.

It was then the one goal apiece in the third quarter, Claremont's Alex Manuel and East Perth's from Jake Waterman, before neither side was able to kick a goal in the last term with the Tigers going on to score the 24-point win to move into fifth position at the expense of the Royals.

It was challenging conditions again as the reserves match unfolded at Claremont Oval but in the end it was the Tigers who started strongly and held on to beat the Royals by nine points.

Claremont kicked four goals to one in the opening quarter before neither team managed a goal in the entire second term. The Tigers then kicked three goals to two in the third term and withstood East Perth kicking the only three goals of the last quarter to hold on and win 7.8 (50) to 6.5 (41).

Tyron Smallwood kicked three goals for Claremont from 19 possessions and seven tackles.

Jacob Sideris also gathered 27 disposals for the Tigers, Bailey Bennett 23, Rylie Morgan 21, Declan McNamara 18 and Jordan Clark 17.

Matt Young kicked two goals for East Perth to go with 27 possessions, seven tackles, four marks and four inside-50 entries.

Ben Miller also finished with 25 touches for the Royals, Nathan Arbon 23, Dwayn Bolton 18, Harley Stack 18 and Kye Willcocks 17.

Claremont's reward for winning and returning to the top five is copping a fresh Subiaco who come into the clash this Saturday at Claremont Oval undefeated guaranteed of the minor premiership after 13 consecutive wins to open 2018.

East Perth might have delivered a disappointing performance against Claremont but could still move back into the WAFL top five with a win this Saturday against Perth at Leederville Oval.
