Round 18 Colts Wrap

WEST Perth kept its hopes alive of reaching the finals in the WAFL Colts for 2018 with a win over South Fremantle on Saturday while top two teams Subiaco and Peel Thunder also kept their winning ways going.

There were just the three matches in Round 18 of the colts on Saturday starting off with solid wins for Subiaco and Peel Thunder respectively as they go another step towards securing those top two positions while West Perth then moved to being just percentage out of fifth position.

Saturday's colts action got underway at Bendigo Bank Stadium with Peel Thunder scoring a hard fought 10.12 (72) to 9.9 (63) victory over East Perth.

Subiaco then remained a game clear in top position in the colts with a 9.5 (59) to 3.3 (21) victory against the third placed Swan Districts at Leederville Oval.

The last game of the round then took place at Fremantle Community Bank Oval with West Perth closing in on a finals position beating South Fremantle 7.11 (53) to 3.7 (25).

Following 18 rounds of the 2018 WAFL colts season, Subiaco (12-3) sits clear on top of the ladder ahead of Peel Thunder (11-5).

Swan Districts (9-7) remains third just ahead of East Fremantle (9-6) with South Fremantle (6-9) still fifth just in front of West Perth (6-10), Perth (6-9), Claremont (5-10) and East Perth (5-10).

PEEL THUNDER v EAST PERTH

Peel Thunder further consolidated its second position in the WAFL colts with a hard fought nine-point victory against East Perth at Bendigo Bank Stadium on Saturday.

The 10.12 (72) to 9.9 (63) victory for Peel improves the Thunder to an 11-5 record in the 2018 WAFL colts season in second position a game behind the league-leading Subiaco but two games and significant percentage ahead of the third placed Swan Districts.

East Perth slipped to a game and percentage behind the fifth placed South Fremantle with the Royals' finals hopes taking a hit as they current sit in last place with a 5-10 record.

East Perth started the game strongly with four goals to one in the opening quarter, but Peel responded in the second term with the only three goals to make it a one-point ball game at the main break.

The Thunder remained in control through the third quarter with another four goals to two and then despite the Royals outscoring them in the third quarter, Peel still came away with a nine-point win that will just about secure their top two position.

Kilian Rawson kicked three goals from just four kicks for Peel with Jake Willis also booting two majors.

Lachlan Riley gathered 24 possessions for the Thunder, Jarvis Pina 15, Jason Carter 15, Lachlan Beverly 14 and Deon Welhan 14. Both Jai Tregenza and Brendan Cooke had 24 hit outs in the ruck.

Jarrod Hamer-Mathew kicked three goals for East Perth from eight kicks.

Damon Greaves gathered 20 possessions for the Royals, Jacob Msando 18, Cooper Sparks 17, Louis Miller 16 and Rhai-Arn Cox 16.

 

SUBIACO v SWAN DISTRICTS

It was first against third in the colts contest at Leederville Oval on Saturday with the league-leading Subiaco coming away 38-point winners against Swan Districts.

Subiaco maintained its advantage on top of the colts following Round 18 but Swan Districts is still third as well despite the loss.

Subiaco came out and kicked the opening two goals of the first quarter and ended up holding Swan Districts to just three behinds for the entire first half to lead by 23 points at the main break.

It was another three goals for Subiaco in the third quarter and even though Swans did open their account, the Lions led by 38 points at three quarter-time.

It was then two goals apiece in the last quarter with Subiaco running out 9.5 (59) to 3.3 (21) victors over Swan Districts.

Jack Mayo kicked three goals for Subiaco from 18 possessions and five marks with Nathan French (17 possessions) and Zane Shellabear-Healey (24, seven marks) kicking two goals apiece. 

Liam Hickmott delivered an impressive performance for Subiaco made up of 35 possessions and six tackles.

Tristan Hobley also had 30 disposals, Kyle Stainsby 26, Abraham Clinch 21, Jake McKinnon 20 and Taj Schofield 18.

Harry Edwards, Max Bradley and Ayden Cartwright were Swan Districts' lone goal scorers.

Joe Hinder gathered 25 possessions for Swans, Kade Wallrodt 24, Jackson Beck 20, Edwards 18, Jaygar Martin 17, Jak Watson 16, Jake Pasini 15 and Seb Bright 15 to go with 14 hit outs.

 

SOUTH FREMANTLE v WEST PERTH

While the top four teams are locked away to play finals in the colts for 2018, fifth position is still up for grabs and that's even more the case after West Perth's win against South Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday.

South Fremantle came into the game with a one-win advantage over West Perth in fifth position, but that changed on Saturday at the port with the Falcons on top from start to finish.

West Perth kicked the only two goals of the first quarter with the game taking place at Fremantle Community Bank Oval following the afternoon's league contest.

It was another two goals to one in the second quarter the way of the Falcons as they headed into the half-time break leading by 17 points.

West Perth then held South Fremantle to just the one point in the third quarter while kicking 2.6 themselves to stretch the lead to 34 points by three quarter-time.

South Fremantle did manage two goals to one in the last term but West Perth still came away with the 7.11 (53) to 3.7 (25) to close to within percentage of the Bulldogs in fifth position.

Jack Burke kicked two goals for West Perth while Ben Johnson, Tom Medhat, Koopah Todd, Craig Farmer and Callum Johnson all kicked a goal apiece.

Tyron Hindmarsh compiled 24 possessions for the Falcons while Bailey Chalmers finished with 23 disposals and 12 tackles.

Jaxon Prior also had 22 touches for West Perth, Daniel Rowe 21, Medhat 16, Alec Johnson 15, Ben Johnson 14, Todd 13 and Zac Patterson 13 to go with 40 hit outs in the ruck.

Lachlan Johnson kicked two goals from four kicks for South Fremantle with the Bulldogs' other goal coming from Manfred Kelly.

Matthew Ward was terrific for South Fremantle finishing with 31 possessions, 10 tackles and seven inside-50 entries.

James Russell also gathered 25 disposals for the Bulldogs, Enrique Aiken-Featherstone 20, Nash Miller 19 (14 hit outs), Jaxon Bellchambers 18, Jack Redman 17 and Manfred Kelly 17.
