Round 19 Colts Wrap

SUBIACO has now all but locked away the WAFL colts minor premiership after beating West Perth in Round 19 on Saturday while East Fremantle consolidated third position, South Fremantle fifth place and Claremont kept its slim finals hopes alive.

Every team in the competition was still capable of reaching the finals entering the Round 19 action in the WAFL colts on Saturday morning, but losses for West Perth and East Perth have all but ruled them out of contention with Perth and Claremont just clinging to remaining in touch.

All four of the matches in Round 19 took place on Saturday morning with Subiaco moving two games and percentage clear on top of the ladder beating West Perth 12.12 (84) to 3.5 (23) at Joondalup Arena.

Claremont kept its slim finals hopes alive at Lathlain Park beating Perth 8.8 (56) to 7.7 (49).

South Fremantle was able to consolidate fifth position at Steel Blue Oval with an 8.7 (55) to 3.11 (29) victory against Swan Districts.

East Fremantle then went closer to sewing up third position and a double chance in the finals with a 15.5 (95) to 6.5 (41) victory over East Perth at Leederville Oval.

Following 19 rounds of the 2018 season in the colts, Subiaco sits on top of the ladder with a 13-3 record ahead of Peel Thunder who are still second at 11-5 despite the Round 19 bye.

East Fremantle is in third position with a 10-6 record with Swan Districts still fourth at 9-8 and then South Fremantle fifth at 7-9.

West Perth (6-11) is still sixth but have slipped out of finals contention with just one game remaining while Perth (6-10) and Claremont (6-10) are still an outside chance. East Perth (5-11) sits in last position.

PERTH v CLAREMONT

Perth and Claremont were fighting to stay in the WAFL colts finals race at Lathlain Park on Saturday with the Tigers coming out with a narrow seven-point victory.

The Round 19 result means that Claremont and Perth will face a big challenge to play finals in the colts in 2018.

Both the Demons and Tigers currently have 6-10 record on the season to be behind the fifth placed South Fremantle who are 7-9.

Perth finishes the season against South Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval this Saturday and then Subiaco at Leederville Oval in the final round. Claremont takes on Peel Thunder at Claremont Oval this Saturday before Swan Districts in Round 21 at Steel Blue Oval.

Claremont started strongly on Saturday at Lathlain Park with two goals to one in the first quarter before the Demons managed to turn things around and lead by two points at half-time.

The Tigers managed to kick three goals to two in the third quarter to lead by five points at three quarter-time before both teams kicked two goals each in the last term with Claremont holding on to win 8.8 (56) to 7.7 (49).

Jack Monaghan and Joel Western kicked two goals each for Claremont.

Cameron Stedman picked up 30 possessions for the Tigers, Max Grant 24, Jamie Forsyth 20, Western 20, Corey Hitchcock 20, Louis Passera 19, Ben Elliott 18 and Oliver Henderson 18.

Trenayne Hodder kicked two goals for Perth from eight kicks and six tackles.

Maverick Hamilton gathered 27 possessions for the Demons, Nathan O'Driscoll 26, Bailey Smith 22, Zac Casey 21 (12 tackles) and Nyika John 20.

WEST PERTH v SUBIACO

Subiaco's colts took a big step towards securing the minor premiership with a big win over West Perth on Saturday at Joondalup Arena on the back of all but ending the finals hopes of the Falcons.

It was a crucial win for Subiaco with the Lions as a result improving to a 13-3 record on the season to sit two games clear in top spot with two games remaining. 

One more win in their remaining two matches against East Fremantle and Perth, and Subiaco will be guaranteed of the minor premiership in the colts with them currently two games clear of the second placed Peel Thunder.

West Perth has just the one game left in its season now against East Perth this Saturday at Leederville Oval with them a game and significant percentage behind the fifth placed South Fremantle.

Subiaco managed to open a lead of eight points by quarter-time before kicking three goals to two to be up to the good of 16 points at half-time.

Subiaco really took over in the third quarter with four goals to nil and then the Lions booted another three to nil in the fourth term to win 12.12 (84) to 3.5 (23).

Jack Mayo kicked three goals for Subiaco from 20 possessions, 11 marks and five inside-50 entries while Trey Kennedy also kicked three goals from 13 touches and six tackles.

Jordan Faraone and Ben Golding also kicked two goals each for the Lions.

Liam Hickmott was tremendous with 36 possessions, nine tackles and eight inside 50s while Tristan Hobley gathered 30 disposals, Wil Hickmott 25, Abraham Clinch 24, Adam Vallelonga 20, Kyle Stainsby 19, Matthew Pannell 16 and Zane Shellabear-Healey 16.

Jack Burke, Lachlan Rewell and Zak Patterson were the goal scorers for West Perth.

Bailey Chalmers finished with 25 possessions for the Falcons, Jaxon Prior 24, Alec Johnson 24, Nathan Murray 23, Daniel Rowe 23 and Tyron Hindmarsh 20.

SWAN DISTRICTS v SOUTH FREMANTLE

South Fremantle took a significant step towards guaranteeing a place in the WAFL colts finals for 2018 with Saturday's 26-point win over the fourth placed Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval.

Swans are already locked in to play finals for 2018, but they missed a chance to keep their hopes alive of earning a double chance still with a top three finish with Saturday's result on home turf.

In the end, the 8.7 (55) to 3.11 (29) win for South Fremantle could just about lock away the top five positions and mean that the two teams meet again in the first week of the finals in an elimination final.

Swans remain in fourth position with a 9-8 record and the bye to come in Round 20 before a clash with Claremont in the final round. Already a game and percentage behind the third placed East Fremantle, they now look destined to finish in that spot.

Meanwhile, South Fremantle improved to a 7-9 record to now be a game and significant percentage clear of the chasing pack of West Perth, Perth and Claremont with games to finish against the Demons and East Fremantle.

It was just a goal apiece for both teams in the opening quarter before South Fremantle managed the only two goals of the second term to head into half-time leading by nine points.

Again the Bulldogs kicked the only two goals of the third quarter to hold a 22-point lead at three quarter-time and then with three goals to two in the final stanza go on to win by 26 points.

Lachlan Feeney kicked two goals for South Fremantle to go with 13 possessions and three entries inside the forward 50.

Enrique Aiken-Featherstone amassed 27 possessions for the Bulldogs while laying eight tackles with Manfred Kelly collecting 21 disposals, Toby McQuilkin 18, James Russell 18, Tom Blechynden 18, Jack Redman 17 and Jack Fenton 17 to go with 11 hit outs and five inside 50s.

Atem Deng, Denver Grainger-Barras and Ayden Cartwright were the goalkickers on the morning for Swan Districts.

Deng also finished with 23 possessions for Swans, Harry Edwards 22, Riley Garcia 21, Nathan Ireland 19, Brenton Hilton 18 and Joe Hinder 17 to go with 11 marks.

EAST PERTH v EAST FREMANTLE

East Fremantle's colts went a long way to securing third position in the WAFL colts and earning a double chance come finals time after a 54-point victory against East Perth at Leederville Oval.

It was an important and impressive win for the Sharks with them improving to a 10-6 record to now be in third position a game behind the second placed Peel Thunder and a game ahead of the fourth placed Swan Districts with a game in hand also on Swans.

The loss means that East Perth can no longer reach finals with the Royals sitting in last position with a 5-11 record to be two games and a massive percentage behind the fifth placed South Fremantle.

East Fremantle only held a five-point lead at quarter-time but the Sharks then kicked five goals to one in the second term to head into half-time leading by 30 points.

It was another four goals to one in the third quarter and then three to two in the last with East Fremantle ending up beating East Perth 15.5 (95) to 6.5 (41).

Dylan Curley, just a couple of weeks removed from making his league debut, kicked four goals for East Fremantle to go with 19 possessions, 16 hit outs, nine marks and four tackles.

Cody Smith also kicked three goals with 20 disposals, six tackles, five marks and four inside 50s while Ed Curley and Ethan Brown added two goals apiece.

Trent Rivers picked up 24 possessions for the Sharks, Jai Jackson 21 (10 tackles), Zac Wilkinson 20, Tom Monaghan 15, Nick Patat 14 and Tom Wright 14 (18 tackles).

Jarrod Hamer-Mathew and Ashley Willcocks kicked two goals each for East Perth.

Tom Baulch racked up 34 possessions for the Royals, Damon Greaves 22 (16 tackles), Matthew Zelesco 19, Louis Miller 18, Patrick Reilly 17 and Cooper Sparks 17.
