Round 20 Match Reports
THE WAFL's top three teams all flexed their muscles in Round 20 action on Saturday as Subiaco, South Fremantle and West Perth recorded comfortable wins while Claremont came from behind to beat Peel Thunder and lock in a finals berth in 2018.
It was the second last round of the 2018 home and away season on Saturday and while Subiaco, South Fremantle and West Perth couldn’t move from the top three spots, and Swan Districts and East Fremantle were anchored at the bottom, the last two finals positions were up for grabs.
Going into the penultimate round, Claremont, East Perth, Perth and Peel Thunder were still a chance to play finals and that's now still the case heading into the final round next Saturday but the job is decidedly more challenging for the Demons than the rest.
The only match on Saturday featuring two of those four teams took place at Claremont Oval with Claremont locking away a finals appearance beating peel Thunder 12.8 (80) to 11.6 (72).
Perth slipped further from contention with South Fremantle beating the Demons 17.13 (115) to 5.7 (37) at Fremantle Community Bank Oval to lock themselves into second spot in the process.
East Perth also missed a chance to secure its position with West Perth defeating the Royals 16.10 (106) to 13.10 (88) at Leederville Oval.
The only game with no finals implications took place at East Fremantle Oval with Subiaco beating East Fremantle 20.17 (137) to 6.10 (46).
That all means that Subiaco will finish first, South Fremantle second and West Perth third while Claremont will remain either fourth or fifth depending on if it beats Swan Districts next Saturday or not.
East Perth and Peel Thunder meet next Saturday in Mandurah with the winner to play finals.
The only way for Perth to reach the finals is to hand Subiaco its only defeat of 2018 and if Peel beats East Perth but the Demons' are able to finish with a higher percentage. The Demons can't make up the percentage gap on the Royals.
