WAFC Media Statement: WAFL Reserves Grand Final

Monday, August 27, 2018 - 11:56 AM

"The West Australian Football Commission recognises the importance of the WAFL Reserves in supporting the success of the WAFL competition and we are focussing our efforts on making sure the Reserves Grand Final is a great experience for everyone involved on Saturday, September 22.”

“Like all WAFL clubs, we wanted to play the Reserves Grand Final at Optus Stadium on the same day as the League and Colts, however the significant cost of playing all three games on the same day, along with our commercial broadcast obligations, meant it wasn't possible.”

“We have worked hard with Optus Stadium to explore all options but it is a new era for WA football with a new financial model and we must adapt to the new stadium moving forward.”

“We will undertake a full review at the end of the year and hopefully with a bumper crowd to support the commercial model at Optus Stadium we will be able to reconsider how the Reserves Grand Final is scheduled in the future.”

“The Reserves Premiers will also be invited to attend Optus Stadium so they can be celebrated at half time of the League Grand Final and have their achievements showcased.”

“We have an obligation to showcase the WAFL on Grand Final day and Optus Stadium provides an amazing opportunity for WAFL fans and players to experience a world-class stadium, which we hope will become the long-term home of the WAFL Grand Final.”

“The WAFC has also been overwhelmed by the great public response to the League Grand Final being scheduled at Optus Stadium, followed by the first ever public kick-to-kick, which has generated great excitement among WAFL fans of all ages.”
