Derby day delight
East Perth recorded an emphatic win on WA Day in front of a passionate crowd for the derby day bash against West Perth. The victory was a well-rounded team performance and a sustained effort for the full four quarters. It came as a much needed win for the Royals who sit just outside the top 5 on equal points with Swan Districts who they take on this Saturday at Steel Blue Oval.
The Royals had only managed to kick 9 goals in their two preceding matches but they doubled that on Monday kicking 18 to end a three game losing streak. Seven of those goals came in the second quarter, accelerating East Perth's lead, which they held onto for the remainder of the match running away as 48 point victors.
Royal's coach, Brian Dawson was pleased with the result: "Great win today with plenty of intent and attack during tight situations. It's the start of a long process for us to get back on track. We'll keep putting our best foot forward".
Scotty Lycett was instrumental on WA Day taking 6 marks and kicking 4 goals. Paul Johnson stood tall and lead the drive from the centre with 58 hitouts. Co-captain, Brendan Lee looked sharp with 23 possessions and a great goal but it was Craig Wulff who landed the mark of the round, which can be seen here.
Young Clayton Giblett did better than stay in the contest, he landed himself a couple of goals as did Malcom Karpany who celebrated his twentieth birthday during the week. Another person celebrating was Freddie Clutterbuck who was terrific in his milestone match. He finished the day with 24 possessions, 2 goals and was deservedly carried off the field on the shoulders of his teammates. Hoping to follow in similar fashion this weekend is Jarrad Oakley Nicholls who notches up his 100th match.
Get down to Steel Blue Oval for the round 11 clash against Swans Districts, bounce down at 1:40pm, Saturday.
