Greaves' New Opportunity
Damon Greaves has informed the Club that he plans to put a hold on his WAFL career with East Perth to pursue an opportunity to train as an NFL punter through ProKick Australia. Greaves has started the training program in Melbourne and is currently speaking with various Colleges in the USA with the aim of receiving a scholarship and making the move in 2023.
“The opportunity to live in another Country, to enjoy new experiences and receive a free education, was a hard one to pass on” Greaves said.
“This is a new sport, that will come with new challenges, however I’m very excited about the opportunity”.
Greaves hails from Busselton where he graduated through our South West development programs before being drafted to Hawthorn with the 13th Pick in the 2019 Rookie Draft. Upon being delisted by the Hawks at the end of the 2021 Season, Greaves returned to the Royals where he made a strong impression through his great work-ethic and character. His high training standards and preparation led the team to vote him in as part of the 2022 Leadership Group.
East Perth Football Operation Manager Warren Parker was grateful for the contributions that Greaves had made since returning to the Club. “Damon is a high quality character and a really hard working kid and we can’t wait to see what he achieves in a different sporting arena” said Parker. “He’s shown all the characteristics of a future Club Captain and it’ll be tough for us to replace a bloke of his quality both on and off the field”
Greaves has thanked the club saying, “It’s a bittersweet goodbye for me, as I can see the Club heading in a great direction next year. I’d like to thank all members, my sponsors, the Wells Family and the Downie Family, coaches and players for my time so far. I’ve created great friendships and relationships with not only the players, but members as well. I’ll be keeping a close eye on Ross and the boys next year, cheering them on”.
We wish Damon all the best in his endeavours and will be keeping a close eye on his progress as he transitions to the American Gridiron.
