A Royal Reception for New WAFLW Side in 2023
East Perth has been confirmed as the eighth League side in the WAFLW League Competition next season in a major boost for local women’s football.
“This is a big day in the history of this proud Club.” Director of Women’s Football Jo Davies said.
“Being able to provide our female players in both our metro and country districts a completed talent pathway is an important milestone.”
The inclusion of the Royals follows the introduction of West Perth to the League Competition this season.
Ms Davies continued “I would like to thank Scott Baker and his team at the WAFC for their collaboration throughout this process and I congratulate Jason Wittorff-Bloom, Angus Schumacher and Craig Matthews for their tireless work putting together our submission.”
As part of a new look WAFLW next year, WAFL clubs have formed a majority decision to suspend the Women’s Reserves competition, with a review to happen at the end of the 2024 season.
The West Australian Football Commission is open to reintroducing the Reserves competition as the number of talented female footballers continues to grow.
The focus for the WAFC is the development of talent, across the Rogers Cup and League to ensure a sustainable State League competition and pathway for up-and-coming talent.
“We are fortunate to have many wonderful women involved in football at all levels throughout our Club and Districts.” CEO Dean Turner said.
“It is our responsibility to provide all of them with the very best opportunities possible, as well as, facilitating their development for them to be able to achieve their potential. Today’s announcement strengthens this commitment.”
The East Perth Women’s Football programme is currently based at Dianella Open Space. The Club is in discussions with the AFL, WAFC and City of Vincent regarding lighting and turfing upgrades that would allow both the WAFLW and Rogers Cup teams to play all their games at Leederville Oval.
Details of the 2023 WAFLW season and team signings will be announced shortly.
