A Big Day for the Big Show: Footyville hits Leederville!

Tuesday, September 27, 2022 - 1:41 PM by Rachael Osborne

After 20 home and away rounds, three weeks of finals and one of the most competitive WAFL competitions in decades - we are only days away.

On Saturday, October 1, footy fans will see Leederville turn into ‘Footyville’ as we celebrate Western Australian football with the 2022 WAFL Grand Final matches.

Colts, Reserves and Leagues games will be played, with an all-day football experience promised.

West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) Chief Executive Officer, Michael Roberts, said he is excited to see the games.

“This has been a big year for WA football and it’s exciting to see the guts and determination play out in the grand final,” Roberts said.

“Winning a premiership is the holy grail, you can’t beat it and this will be a memorable time for many,”

“There will be ample seating, plenty of food and drinks, activities for the kids and skydivers will be dropping in prior to the league game - just to name a few.”

On Sunday, West Perth waited with bated breath to see who they would be playing in the Grand Final, as each of their teams have made it to their respective Grand Finals.

Claremont Tigers won their League Preliminary Final against East Fremantle and will be advancing to the Grand Final.

After a disappointing schedule clash meant Optus stadium was unavailable, the WAFC conducted an extensive search through expression of interest bids to select a venue host.

The City of Vincent’s Leederville Oval won the rights to host the grand final, in a bid that boasted crowd capacity, history, turf rejuvenation and an incredible game day experience in and around the grounds.

The ground also promises neutral territory for the League Grand Final.

City of Vincent Mayor Emma Cole said the City is excited by the partnership to host the Grand Final.

“It’s the first time in the WAFL’s history that the big game will be held at Leederville Oval, and to celebrate we’re putting on Footyville – a festival of WAFL,” Mayor Cole said.

“Our main streets will be closed to cars to create a festival atmosphere with festivities from Leederville Oval all the way to the Leederville Village Square,"

“There will be a live music stage outside the former Greens & Co., big screens televising the action and family-friendly activities throughout."

After a series of ongoing wet weather, footy fans were left worried about the state of the turf.

WAFC CEO Michael Roberts said he is confident the turf is game day ready.

“As part of their bid, the City of Vincent made a commitment to have the turf match-day ready,” Roberts said.

“It’s been done by bits and has had limited foot traffic since the rejuvenation started. With plenty of sunny days coming over the next couple of days, it’s looking pretty good.”
