Royals Ready to Break Perth Derby Drought on WA Day

East Perth has enjoyed modest on field success in recent years, but the club’s struggles against bitter rivals West Perth is a source of added frustration. 

The Falcons have won their past six games against the Royals dating back to Round 15, 2019, which is West Perth’s equal fourth longest streak of success against East Perth. 

The reigning premiers are fifth on the table and Ross McQueen’s side is sixth, ensuring this Perth Derby has added significance. 

East Perth Captain Hamish Brayshaw is embracing the chance to host last year’s best team at Leederville Oval, the venue for the 2022 Grand Final. 

“It's a massive game for our club, there’s a long-standing rivalry?and to play on WA Day builds the game to have a finals like feel,” Brayshaw said.? 

“This is the first time in a few seasons we've come into the game level on the ladder, so we feel like we're in a really good place with our footy and are hitting our straps.” 

The confidence in the East Perth camp could also stem from the fact that in the last 10 games between these teams at Leederville Oval the Royals have won eight matches. 

After winning their first three games, then losing their next three, a convincing win over the West Coast Eagles was just the result the Royals needed. 

“The win on the weekend gives us confidence in the way we're playing footy,” Brashaw said. 

“Getting a win is always good but we were able to try some things and move the ball in ways that we haven't in the first part of the year.” 

Brayshaw has been a strong performer this year, playing every game, averaging 26 disposals a match, and kicking 8 goals. 

“I’m happy with the way I've been playing, hitting the scoreboard is something I haven't done consistently in my career so that's been a positive,” he said. 

“The inside mix that we've got in there is a real threat and having Scott Jones giving Mitch Crowden, Angus Schumacher, and myself first use of the footy has allowed all of us to work nicely into the year. 

“We've obviously added talent to our list, and I think we're gelling nicely. 

“It takes a while to really get in sync with new teammates, but I feel like we're there now.
