Royals Wrap Up Round 20
The Royals could not stop a dangerous Peel Thunder on the weekend, going down to the Thunder by …..
In a significant game for both sides, the stakes were high with a safe spot in the finals up for grabs.
East Perth started the game well, with Tom Lamb booting the first goal of the match after a strong contested mark. Lamb showed some promise up forward for the Royals, with clever bodywork and overheard marking that could definitely be tapped into for future games. Jonathon Giles also got on the scoreboard. The Royals tackling pressure around the ground and defensive rebounding held them in good stead, and East Perth were up by the end of the first break.
Peel came out blistering in the second quarter and dominated play inside their forward 50 for most of the term. East Perth were finding it hard to even get their hands on the footy, whilst the Thunder won key stoppages and center clearances to go forward. After Peel put on four consecutive goals, debutant Samuel Powell-Pepper eventually kicked the Royals first (and his first league goal) for the quarter. Mitchell Brown got a late major for East Perth jut before the siren, but the Thunder clearly won the quarter five goals to two.
The third term was a goalless affair for the Royals and the Thunder ran away with the match, putting on another five goal haul. Crucial errors cost East Perth, as the Thunder capitalized on turnovers. Shayne Hille and Jonathon Giles scored a few late goals one in the final term but Peel’s midfield experience and relentless offense proved too damaging. The Royals went down to the Thunder by 36 points.
The final score was East Perth 7.11 53 to Peel Thunder 13.11 89.
The Royals now take on Subiaco at Medibank Stadium this Saturday.
