Results: Round 6
East Perth have broken a five year drought by securing victory over Subiaco, their Leederville Oval co-tenants on Saturday.
The nine-point – 9.9 (63) to 7.12 (54) – win was the Royals’ first over the Lions since round three, 2015.
“It’s great for the club on two levels,” League coach Jeremy Barnard told The West Australian following the match.
“Firstly it keeps our season alive, which is so important in a shortened season.
“Secondly since splitting from the Eagles, as we wanted to do, we’ve copped some fair hidings against Subi, they’ve been a great club for a long time.
“To get this win is great for our club and great for our supporters. I thought it was a really gutsy win, a real East Perth-style win.”
Veteran defender Nathan Blee was invaluable in defence when Subiaco pressed late, while vice-captain Jackson Ramsay continued his outstanding form, collecting 29 possessions (15 of those contested), nine clearances, six tackles and four inside 50s.
“We didn’t play our best footy for four quarters but we were able to hang in there and put pressure on our opposition,” said Barnard.
“When we were able to control the game, we were able to control the ball. I think that was the big difference for us this week compared to last.”
In the Reserves, East Perth continued their unbeaten start to the season. With scores locked at three quarter time, Aaron Ballantyne’s team clicked into gear in the final term to run away 18-point victors. In the Colts, Daniel Curtis’ side were gallant but ultimately suffered a 25-point loss at the hands of Subiaco.
East Perth face Swan Districts on Saturday in Round 7 of the 2020 Optus WAFL Season.
