Redevelopment at Leederville To Begin Monday
Leederville’s iconic Sullivan Logistics Stadium will be transformed with work commencing next week.
As part of the project, the turf will be replaced and the lighting will be upgraded to AFL broadcast standard.
Works will start on Monday 21 October 2024 and be completed by March 2025, ahead of the WAFL season. The stadium will be closed during this time.
The works include two major upgrades.
Turf renewal
The existing turf has a poor soil profile which limits drainage, causing the ground to become very muddy and slippery when there is heavy rain.???
The turf renewal will involve the removal of approximately 300mm of soil, which will then be replaced with new soil to improve drainage before new turf is installed.
A new in-ground irrigation system will also be installed which will improve water efficiency and reduce groundwater usage.
Lighting upgrade
The existing lights no longer provide lighting that meets the needs of facility users.
The lighting system will be upgraded to meet broadcast standards, allowing for a range of uses:
- 200 lux for club training
- 500 lux for club games
- 1000 lux for televised games
This upgrade will also include the ability to lower brightness for community use when matches or events are not taking place, meaning the local community can enjoy the oval under dimmed lights in the evenings.
The turf and lighting works are not expected to cause significant traffic or noise impacts., however, access to the East Perth Administration and Team store, as well as Function Area will be limited during this time and the carpark behid the administration will be closed until further notice.
Once the upgrades are complete, Vincent will be able to host major twilight WAFL, WAFLW, AFLW and possibly AFL matches.
East Perth will continue to work with the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries, WA Football Commission, City of Vincent and Subiaco Football Clubs, to ensure the turf and lighting works run smoothly over the next few months.
