Vale Ian “Serge” Miller

Sad news today with the passing of Ian “Serge” Miller.

When Serge arrived at East Perth in 1978, he already carried one of the great reputations in WA football — a Sandover Medallist and All-Australian from his years at Perth Football Club.

He wasted no time adding to it in Royals colours, claiming a Premiership in his very first season and taking out the Simpson Medal in that Grand Final under coach Barry Cable. He backed it up with a runner-up Fairest and Best the following year.

That flag was just one chapter of an extraordinary football life. Serge went on to become a WA Football Hall of Famer, a West Coast Eagles life member, and, most fittingly for a man who cared about people first, the Eagles’ player services coordinator for over two decades, looking after generations of young footballers as they left home to chase their dream.
