Round 1 Colts Wrap

Friday, April 12, 2019 - 8:00 AM - by Chris Pike

IT was an exciting start to the 2019 WAFL Colts season with a couple of thrilling contests and a host of standout performances from emerging stars.

All four Round 1 WAFL Colts matches took place on Saturday with two of them decided by less than a goal.

Those matches saw East Fremantle kick the last two goals of the game to beat Claremont 10.6 (66) to 9.10 (64) at Claremont Oval while Swan Districts also kicked the last goal of its clash with South Fremantle, winning 9.9 (63) to 8.11 (59) at Steel Blue Oval.

East Perth then knocked off the reigning premier Subiaco with a 10.8 (68) to 5.5 (35) win at Leederville Oval with Peel Thunder defeating West Perth 11.7 (73) to 8.8 (56) at Mandurah's David Grays Arena.

SUBIACO 5.5 (35) lost to EAST PERTH 10.8 (68)

East Perth made an impressive start to its 2019 WAFL Colts campaign beating the reigning premier Subiaco by 33 points in the clash of the Leederville Oval co-tenants.

Subiaco's colts are coming off the premiership from 2018 but have a new coach with Chayce Creedy taking over from Beau Wardman who is now coaching the league side.

But the Lions couldn’t get their premiership defence off to a winning start with East Perth proving too strong with Garry Moss coaching.

East Perth started well kicking five goals to three in the first quarter and then kicked the only two goals of the second term to lead by 27 points at half-time.

Subiaco did close the gap to 19 points by three quarter-time but East Perth responded with the only two goals of the final term to win 10.8 (68) to 5.5 (35).

Jaxon East produced a best on ground display for East Perth kicking three goals to go with 27 possessions, six marks and five entries inside the forward 50. Sebit Kuek kicked two goals as well.

Harley Sparks was tremendous for the Royals with 32 possessions while Cooper Sparks gathered 25 disposals, Cody Nash 23, Spider Lockitt 21, Jed Montgomerie 21 (11 hit outs), Adam Boules 19 (10 marks), and Cody Rodgers 19.

Nicholas Martin kicked two goals for Subiaco along with 19 possessions, five marks, three tackles and three inside 50s.

Tristan Hobley finished with 30 possessions and 10 tackles for Subiaco with Jacob Peletier gathering 26 disposals, Ben Golding 25, Isaac Clinch 20, Noah Ash 17, Jack Borchet 17 and Abraham Clinch 17.
