WA State 16s don odd socks for sarcoma awareness

The WA State 16s team will don odd socks during tonight’s trial match against the WA Amateur Football League State Colts at Subiaco Oval to raise awareness and funds for sarcoma research.

This initiative is part of a wider football community effort between the West Perth, Claremont and Subiaco football districts.

Last year the football community managed to raise more than $100,000 which bumped the total amount of money raised over the last four years to more than $30 million.

State 16s to benefit from Banksia Hill trial game

Western Australia’s State 16s will help deliver rehabilitation outcomes while gaining a valuable opportunity to test their skills against a football team from Banksia Hill Juvenile Detention Centre on Saturday, June 9.

The State 16s will play the trial match against Banksia Hill as part of their preparation for the NAB AFL National 16s Championships in June and July.

West Australian Football Commission Executive Manager of Talent and Football Operations Scott Baker said that as well as offering a competitive contest, the game was expected to deliver significant off-field benefits to both groups.

State 18s fight to the finish

Western Australia’s State 18s fell short of Victoria Metro by three goals in an entertaining contest at Optus Stadium today, Sunday, June 10.

Vic Metro won the game 14.10 (94) to 12.4 (76) spearheaded by five goals from key forward Ben King and four goals from Noah Anderson.

Dylan O’Reilly lead the way on the scoreboard for WA with three goals, while Ian Hill and Brad Oldfield kicked two each.

Jeremy Sharp was WA’s best with a goal and 26 possessions. He received great support from Luke Foley with 17 possessions, five tackles and six clearances.

State 18s Championships – Round 1

Western Australia commenced its AFL and AFL Women’s State 18s National Championship campaign last weekend.

WA’s Mundella AFL Women’s State 18s overcame a strong Queensland outfit in their opening clash of the championships at Subiaco Oval on Saturday, June 2.=

Trailing close behind Queensland for the majority of the match, WA put their best foot forward in the final term to take out a 4.6 (30) to 3.9 (27) victory.

Mikayla Hyde booted two goals for WA, while Sabreena Duffy and Kate Bartlett added singles.

Round 9 Colts Wrap

SWAN Districts consolidated top spot in the WAFL Colts beating Perth on Saturday while there were Round 9 wins also for Peel Thunder, East Perth and East Fremantle.

Three of the four Round 9 WAFL colts match ups took place on Saturday starting with Swan Districts consolidating top spot with a 13.6 (84) to 6.4 (40) win over Perth at Steel Blue Oval.

Peel Thunder then consolidated second position on the table with a 12.14 (86) to 7.8 (50) win against Claremont at Claremont Oval while East Perth downed an inaccurate West Perth 6.10 (46) to 3.15 (33) at Joondalup Arena.

Talent partnership producing benefits

Western Australia’s most talented young footballers will benefit from a stronger partnership between the WA State Academy and NAB AFL Academy program next season.
 
From 2019, the AFL’s national Academy program will provide an opportunity for 30 West Australian players to attend high performance camps conducted in partnership with the WAFC and State Academy to provide specialised coaching to more players.
 
This will include a mixture of 17 to 19-year-old players as part of a national upgrade to the NAB AFL Academy, announced recently by the AFL.

WA’s State 18s travel to Adelaide today for their first game of the AFL National Championships against South Australia on Sunday, June 3.

New South West talent program to be launched

A new talent program to provide greater development opportunities for players and coaches in the South West region is being launched by the West Australian Football Commission in partnership with the South West Academy of Sport.
 
The program launch will be hosted at Leschenault sporting complex on Thursday, May 31 with the support of Harvey-Brunswick-Leschenault Junior Football Club.

Training sessions will then take place on Tuesday nights at Capel Oval for the remainder of the 2018 season structured in line with the WAFL Colts and WA talent development program.
